Keffer Barnhart LLP understands that sexual assault is real and can occur quietly in the shadows or openly in public. The attorneys at our firm have represented victims of sexual assault that occurred both in the shadows and openly in public and has received permission to tell the stories of two of those victims.
In one instance, it was a woman who was recovering from substance abuse who was doing quite well after a brief prison sentence. However, she was assigned to a parole officer who preyed upon women. During a home visit after her release, the officer informed the woman that she was “too uptight and needed laid” and gave her a box of condoms. Later, that officer returned to her home, placed a gun on the table, and told her that she “could do this the hard way or the easy way.” After he sexually assaulted her, he told her that if she told anyone about what had happened, they would not believe her because she was a criminal and he was an officer. Keffer Barnhart LLP represented that woman when the parole officer was prosecuted for rape; and continued to represent her when she elected to sue the government agency that hired him.
In another instance, it was the young college student who made the very student-like decision of peeing near some bushes before going into a concert. A male security guard observed the young woman from a distance and approached her. The man, who was a security guard but appeared to be a law enforcement officer, indicated to the two women that he could overlook the public indecency charge if they would show him something. He then proceeded to sexually assault her. Keffer Barnhart LLP represented that woman as the security guard was prosecuted for sexual assault and later represented her in negotiating a settlement with the insurance company of the security company who employed the man who violated her.
To be sure, sexual assault is real and happens more frequently than perhaps we would like to admit. To be sure, it should be addressed as a community, but even more so, it should not be ignored. #metoo #Ibelieveyou
