As Predicted, the Drones Are Coming!

In March of 2014, Keffer Barnhart LLP commented that drones were being utilized by the movie and sports and entertainment industry.  It noted then, “[w]ith that in mind, it would seem only a matter of time before they are regularly employed by local law enforcement agencies for enforcement and surveillance.”  http://www.kefferbarnhart.com/Blogs/2014/March/Drones-and-the-Fourth-Amendment.aspx (last visited May 21, 2017).

The Indystar’s Ryan Martin reported recently that “Indiana's two largest police departments both want drones; one for crowd surveillance at major gatherings Downtown, the other to monitor traffic at events such as the Indiana State Fair.”  However, the article notes that the using them would be appear to be unlawful, http://www.indystar.com/story/news/crime/2017/05/19/indiana-police-departments-want-drones-theres-just-one-big-problem/101212218/ (last visited May 21, 2017).

The article notes that law enforcement indicates they want to be able to use drones in limited situations.  However, as law enforcement and the public become more familiar and used to this technology, it is certainly possible that its use could expand and become more prevalent.
